Polo, the thrilling sport of kings, combines strategy, skill, and horsemanship in a unique and exciting way. Whether you’re planning to watch your first match or considering taking up the sport yourself, understanding the essential rules will enhance your appreciation of the game. At Argentina Polo Day, we’re passionate about introducing newcomers to this captivating sport. Let’s dive into the fundamental rules that govern polo matches.

The Basics

Polo is played on a large field with two teams of four players each. The objective is simple: score more goals than the opposing team by hitting a small ball through the goal posts using a long-handled mallet.

Game Structure

Chukkers: Matches are divided into periods called chukkers, each lasting between  and 7 minutes. A typical game consists of 4 to 6 chukkers, depending on the tournament.

Changing Ends: After each goal, teams switch sides to ensure fairness, accounting for factors like wind and sun.

Key Rules

Right-Hand Rule: Players must always handle the mallet with their right hand, regardless of their natural dominance.

Line of the Ball: This imaginary line is crucial in polo. Players must not cross the line of the ball in a way that creates a dangerous situation.

Riding Off: Players can push opponents off the line of the ball using their body and mount, but grabbing, hitting, or pushing with hands or elbows is prohibited.

Safety First: Helmets are mandatory, and players must carry their mallets safely to avoid disturbing other players or horses.

In polo, horses (referred to as «ponies») are as much athletes as the riders. Players typically use multiple horses per match, changing mounts every 3-4 minutes to ensure peak performance.
